Why Suicide is Not the Answer as Young Adults

Updated: Aug 31, 2023

In the midst of life's challenges, it's not uncommon for young individuals to feel overwhelmed, hopeless, and burdened by their circumstances. Some may even ask the question, "Why me, God?" However, it's important to remember that there's always hope and purpose in the midst of adversity. For Christian youth, the teachings of the Bible offer invaluable guidance and comfort, emphasizing the sanctity of life and the boundless love of God. This article aims to explore why suicide is not the answer for Christian youth, focusing on the messages of hope, faith, and support found in the Christian faith.

Suicide rates among Indian youth have been a growing concern. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for the year 2019, suicide was the leading cause of death among individuals aged 15-39 in India. The suicide rate in this age group was significantly higher compared to other age groups. Some factors contributing to youth suicides in India include academic pressure, relationship issues, family problems, financial stress, and mental health challenges. It's important to note that mental health stigma, limited access to mental health resources, and cultural factors can all play a role in the prevalence of suicide among Indian youth.

Factors Contributing to Suicide

Suicide is a tragic outcome stemming from a confluence of intricate and interconnected factors. Mental health struggles constitute a prominent facet, wherein untreated conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia can amplify a person's vulnerability. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic has spotlighted how prolonged isolation and uncertainty can compound mental health issues, leading to an increase in suicidal ideation worldwide.

Social dynamics also wield a significant influence. Relationships strained by conflict, break-up, abuse, betrayal, or neglect can engender feelings of profound loneliness and despair. Cyberbullying, particularly among adolescents, has gained notoriety as a modern form of social stressor that can push young individuals toward suicide. Additionally, the LGBTQ+ community continues to grapple with higher rates of suicide due to the discrimination, rejection, and lack of acceptance they often encounter.

Society's role in shaping attitudes toward mental health cannot be overlooked. Stigmatization of seeking help for psychological distress can deter individuals from accessing treatment. For instance, many cultures stigmatize mental health issues, making it difficult for individuals to reach out for assistance. This was exemplified by the high suicide rates among farmers in India, who face financial pressures and limited access to mental health resources.

External stressors further contribute to the intricate web of suicide causation. Economic downturns, exemplified by the 2008 global financial crisis, have been linked to increased suicide rates as people face job losses, financial instability, and a sense of hopelessness. Moreover, young people burdened by academic pressure can succumb to overwhelming stress, as seen in countries like South Korea where high student suicide rates have prompted reevaluations of education systems.

Suicide is Not the End

Suicide is not the end: for you as well as for your loved ones. Suicide's ramifications extend far beyond the individual who takes that tragic step. In those darkest moments, it might seem like an escape from unbearable pain, but it's crucial to recognize that it leaves behind a wake of anguish for the ones left behind. The pain of losing a loved one to suicide is unlike any other. It's a cocktail of confusion, guilt, anger, and sorrow that lingers in the hearts of those who cherished the departed. The questions echo ceaselessly: Could something have been done differently? Was there a sign that was missed? The truth is, the aftermath of suicide is a scar that never truly fades. It's a haunting reminder that the one who departed was once a source of joy, laughter, and companionship.

To the person contemplating suicide, it may seem like a definitive way to escape their suffering. However, the biblical perspective invites us to consider the nature of eternity. In the biblical framework, life extends beyond the physical realm. Thus, suicide ceases to be the ultimate escape because suicide could mean the end of earthly pain; but it could also unfortunately mean the beginning of eternal pain! Romans 14:12 says,

"So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God."

The Sanctity of Life

The Bible teaches that every human life is a unique and precious gift from God. The Bible affirms the intrinsic value of every individual, regardless of their struggles, mistakes, or shortcomings. Psalm 139:13-16 reminds us that God knit us together in our mother's womb, and Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us that God has plans for our welfare and future. This affirms that each life has a divine purpose, even when circumstances may appear dire. Human life is sacred and created in the image of God. Taking one's own life is seen as an act of self-destruction, which goes against the principle of valuing the life that God has given. Job 33:4 says,

“The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life."

Life is a precious gift from God and it should be valued and cherished, even in the face of challenges and hardships. The sacredness of life is often intertwined with the commandment to honor and cherish it. The Sixth Commandment, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13), explicitly addresses the preservation of life. This commandment extends beyond physical harm to encompass the idea that life is to be valued and protected from harm, whether through direct action or neglect.

Sufferings are Momentary

Why seek a permanent solution for a temporary problem? From a biblical standpoint, life on Earth is considered temporary compared to the eternity believers will spend with God. Suffering and challenges faced in this world are fleeting compared to the everlasting joy and fulfillment promised by God. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 says,

"For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen."

This passage emphasizes the temporary nature of earthly troubles and suffering, juxtaposing them against the eternal glory that awaits believers. The biblical perspective encourages believers to set their eyes on the promises of God rather than being consumed by present challenges. Romans 8:18 (NIV) says, "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us."

Elijah was a prophet of God in the Old Testament, known for his strong faith and powerful miracles. However, there came a point in his life when he faced intense suffering and felt overwhelmed by despair. In 1 Kings 19, we see Elijah's struggle: After a great victory over the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elijah received a death threat from Queen Jezebel. Fearful and exhausted, Elijah fled into the wilderness. In his distress, he prayed that he might die. 1 Kings 19:4-5 says,

While he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it, and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

He lay down under a broom tree and asked God to take his life, feeling utterly overwhelmed by his circumstances. In this moment of despair, God did not condemn Elijah but provided him with sustenance and rest. An angel visited Elijah twice, encouraging him to eat and rest, as the journey ahead was still long. Elijah eventually reached Mount Horeb, where he had a profound encounter with God. While on the mountain, God appeared to Elijah in a gentle whisper, not in the strong wind, earthquake, or fire. God reminded Elijah of his purpose and assured him that he was not alone. Despite Elijah's struggles and feelings of hopelessness, God had a plan for him.

Find Hope and Strength in God

God has a purpose and plan for every individual's life. Jeremiah 29:11 states, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." This verse reminds us that even in our darkest moments, God's intention is not to harm us but to lead us toward a future filled with hope. The story of Joseph in the Book of Genesis serves as a powerful example of how trusting in God's plan can lead to remarkable outcomes. Despite facing betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, Joseph remained steadfast in his faith. Eventually, he realized that God's plan was greater than his suffering, as he rose to a position of power in Egypt and saved countless lives during a time of famine.

In times of despair, the Bible offers numerous promises of comfort and strength for those who turn to God. Psalm 34:18 assures us that

"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

This verse reminds us that God's presence is closest when we are at our lowest point, offering comfort and healing to our wounded souls. Furthermore, Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers to present their anxieties before God in prayer, promising that "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This promise underscores the transformative power of prayer and the peace that God can provide even in the midst of turmoil. The Story of Job provides a profound perspective on enduring suffering and trusting in God's sovereignty. Despite losing his family, wealth, and health, Job maintained his faith. In the end, his trust in God was rewarded as he experienced restoration and a deepened understanding of God's wisdom.

Fight Suicidal Thoughts with the Word of God

Suicidal thoughts can lead individuals into a place of deep despair and hopelessness. In the face of such darkness, turning to the Bible and declaring its powerful truths can provide a lifeline of strength, comfort, and renewal. By immersing oneself in the Word of God and declaring its promises, individuals can find a source of healing and restoration that guides them away from the brink of despair. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says,

"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

The Bible is filled with promises that ignite hope even in the darkest times. Speaking these promises aloud can be an empowering practice. Psalm 42:11 encourages us to declare, "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." By actively declaring hope and salvation, individuals redirect their focus from despair to anticipation of better days. Romans 12:2 urges us to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Reading and declaring the Word of God acts as a transformative force, replacing negative and destructive thoughts with the truth of God's love and purpose. Proclaiming verses like Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through him who strengthens me") can infuse one's mind with strength and courage. Hebrews 4: 12 says,

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

Immediately Reach Out to Loved Ones

In times of struggling with thoughts of suicide, it is crucial to immediately turn to the support of friends, family, and loved ones. The weight of such emotions can be overwhelming, making it difficult to face them alone. By reaching out to those who care about you, you open the door to understanding, empathy, and potential solutions that you might not be able to see on your own. In the book of Proverbs 17:17, it is written,

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity."

This verse underlines the importance of companionship during both joyful and challenging moments. When faced with suicidal tendencies, you don't have to endure the struggle by yourself; you have people who genuinely care for your well-being and want to help you through it. The journey of seeking help is not a sign of weakness; rather, it's an act of courage and self-awareness. Furthermore, the act of opening up about your struggles can break the cycle of isolation that often accompanies suicidal thoughts. Isolation can deepen feelings of despair and hopelessness, whereas connecting with loved ones can provide a lifeline of hope. Their compassion and understanding can help you find the strength to face your challenges and work toward healing.

Seek Professional Help

When grappling with thoughts of suicide, it is imperative to seek both professional help and guidance from trusted leaders, such as a pastor. The combination of psychological expertise and spiritual support can offer a comprehensive approach to addressing the complex and deeply personal struggles you may be facing. These thoughts are indicative of deep emotional distress and should not be navigated alone. Professional intervention offers the expertise, guidance, and resources necessary to address the complex factors contributing to these feelings. Mental health professionals, including therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists, are equipped with the training and experience to understand and assist individuals in crisis.

They can provide a safe space for you to openly discuss your emotions, thoughts, and struggles. Through evidence-based therapies and interventions, they can help you uncover underlying causes, develop coping strategies, and guide you toward a path of healing. Moreover, timely professional intervention can be life-saving. Mental health professionals are trained to assess the severity of your situation and determine the appropriate course of action, which may include hospitalization if the risk is immediate. They can also collaborate with your support network to ensure you have the necessary care and resources.

Live in a Community

Being part of a faith community can offer a sense of belonging, accountability, and support. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to gather together, spurring one another on towards love and good deeds. Engaging with a church community or youth group can provide a safe space for Christian youth to share their struggles, seek guidance, and receive encouragement from fellow believers. For some individuals, particularly those grappling with suicidal thoughts, the weight of their struggles can become almost unbearable. In such times, finding solace and support becomes crucial for their well-being. One potential source of solace is within a close-knit community like a church or a youth group.

These communities can offer a lifeline to those who are feeling suicidal, providing understanding, compassion, and a sense of belonging that can make all the difference. Churches and youth groups, while primarily centered around spiritual growth and fellowship, also hold the potential to offer a safe haven for those in distress. When a person is living with suicidal thoughts, feelings of isolation often exacerbate their suffering. Being part of a community can help alleviate this isolation by fostering connections with others who share similar values and beliefs. This can create a sense of unity and acceptance that reinforces the idea that they are not alone in their struggles.
