Movies have become an important factor that determines the flow of culture in the contemporary world. However, with the vast array of movies available today, it is essential for young Christians to approach their movie choices with discernment and a solid foundation in their faith. In this article, we present the "10 Commandments of Watching Movies" to help you discern, select and watch movies as a responsible Christian.
1. Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." There is a lot we take in on a daily basis such as food, information, data, news, songs, conversations and so on. Often times, we choose to watch movies to relax and entertain ourselves. What we do not realize is that movies have a lasting impact on us because once we watch them, we have ingested them into our brain and heart. When you watch filth and profanity, you ingest it into your heart! Watch for what you feed your mind!
2. Avoid Profanity and Vulgarity
As followers of Christ, young Christians should strive to maintain moral standards even in their choice of movies. Avoiding movies with profanity, vulgarity, and crude humor is essential to preserving the purity of heart and mind. Such movies can negatively influence the thoughts and attitudes of young Christians, leading them away from their walk with Christ.
3. Be Mindful of Violence and Graphic Content
The depiction of violence and graphic content in movies can desensitize young minds and foster a culture of aggression. Christian youngsters should be cautious when selecting movies that contain excessive violence or explicit scenes. Instead, opt for movies that promote peace, justice, and empathy towards others.
4. Evaluate the Movie's Worldview
Every movie reflects a certain worldview, a set of beliefs and values that shape its narrative and characters. Christian youngsters should be mindful of the underlying worldview presented in the movies they watch. Look for films that align with Christian values such as love, faith, and righteousness. If a movie you are watching is portraying a worldview contrary to the Bible, actively engage with the movie internally and keep discerning what is right and wrong. Discerning the worldview portrayed can help young Christians navigate the complexities of the movie world and reinforce their own beliefs.
5. Consider the Influence of Role Models
Movies often portray characters who serve as role models for the audience. As Christian youngsters, it is essential to be discerning about the character traits and values exhibited by these role models. Seek out movies that present characters who embody virtues like kindness, courage, integrity, and selflessness. Such films can inspire and encourage young Christians to live out these qualities in their own lives.
6. Engage in Critical Thinking and Discernment
Do not be a passive watcher! Watching movies can be an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills. While enjoying the entertainment, also reflect on the themes, messages, and moral dilemmas presented in the movies. By engaging in thoughtful discernment as young Christians, we can cultivate a deeper understanding of the world around us and reinforce our own principles.
7. Seek Movies that Inspire Faith
Movies can serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement in one's faith journey. Christian youngsters should actively seek out movies that deepen their understanding of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Explore films that explore spiritual themes, wrestle with questions of faith, and offer glimpses of divine grace. These movies can ignite a spark of faith and encourage young Christians to walk steadfastly in their Christian life.
8. Review Reviews and Content Prior to Watching
There are a ton of websites that offer reviews and information about the content in a particular movie. You can go to Common Sense Media or IMDB both of which offer information like positive messages, violence, sex and nudity, profanity and substance abuse in each movie. Make it a point to visit a website like this and read about the movie before you decide to watch it.
9. Keep the Baby, Chuck the Bathwater
If you've ever heard of the phrase, "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater," you will understand what this commandment means. As stated already, do not be a passive watcher! Look for lessons and positive messages you can glean from the movie you are watching. I was watching Train to Busan a long time ago and I was wondering what I could possibly learn from a zombie apocalypse movie! As the movie progressed, I was fascinated with how some of the characters in the movie were extremely selfless and risked their own lives in order to save others. It got me thinking of how I would behave if I were in their shoes. Would I stop and help? Or would I run to save my own life? Keep the baby. But discard the bathwater!
10. Watch in Moderation
Do not be glued to your screen. It is indeed possible to become addicted to entertainment and movies. Operate in self-control and self-discipline when it comes to watching movies. Avoid spending a massive amount of time on entertainment. Embrace the world beyond the silver screen.
