THE STRUCTURE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT

The NT is made up of 27 books written by Christians in the first century. The divisions of the NT is as follows

  • Gospels

  • Historical book

  • Pauline epistles

  • General epistles

  • Apocalyptic literature

#1 - Gospels

  • New Testament starts with a block of narratives. The first four gospels deals with the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  • The first four books are called “Gospels” which means “Good news.”

#2 - Historical Book

  • The Acts of the Apostle is generally considered as the historical book of the New Testament.

  • This book mainly deals with the life, ministry and growth of the church.

#3 - Pauline Epistles

  • The second body of the books of the NT is the Pauline Epistles. Epistles means “Letters”

  • There are 14 books which were written by Paul, and the authorship of Hebrews was questionable.

The Early Epistles of Paul are

  • Galatians

  • 1 Thessalonians

  • 2 Thessalonians

The Major Epistles of Paul are

  • Letter to the Romans

  • 1Corinthians

  • 2 Corinthians

The Prison Epistles of Paul are

  • Ephesians

  • Philippians

  • Colossians

  • Philemon

The Pastoral Epistles of Paul are

  • 1 Timothy

  • 2 Timothy

  • Titus

The General Epistles are


The third block of the NT is the General Epistles which has seven books in it and they are

  • James

  • 1 Peter

  • 2 Peter

  • 1 John

  • 2 John

  • 3 John

  • Jude

It is called general epistles mainly because it lacks indication of limited address to a single locality.


The Apocalypse of John

  • Revelation is the second great apocalypse in our Bible, first being the book of Daniel.

  • Revelation comes from Greek word apocalypse which means “disclosure of something”

  • The book of Revelation mainly talks about the end times.
