How to Cope with Anxiety as a Teenager: The Christian Way

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

Are you a young person struggling with anxiety? Discover some practical tips on how to cope with anxiety the Christian way and find peace and comfort in your faith.

When I was sixteen years old, I remember spending my entire day for months wanting to go to bed because that was the only time I could get a break from constantly feeling an ache in my chest and from feeling like I was standing at the edge of a cliff and I was about to fall down. I lost my appetite, ran on fever for most days, lost concentration at school and woke up to diarrhea every single morning. The reason for it all? Crippling anxiety.

As a Christian adolescent, you may experience anxiety and stress just like anyone else your age. Whether it's due to social expectations, school obligations, or personal issues, anxiety can leave you feeling helpless and isolated. You're not alone, though, and your faith may provide you the strategies you need to deal with anxiety in a healthy and helpful way. We'll look at some helpful tips in this post on how to deal with anxiety in a Christian manner and find solace and peace in your faith..

1. Trust God's Plan

When I was going through extended periods of anxiety which lasted up to months on end, it felt impossible to even see a week ahead, let alone see my future and plan for it. During this phase, God taught me how to trust Him. He helped me see beyond the pain and into my future. Trusting God's plan is one of the most crucial elements of anxiety management for Christian teenagers. Having confidence that God has a plan for your life can help ease some of the anxiety and concern, even if it can be challenging to let go of control and believe that all will turn out for the best in the end. Assure yourself that God is in charge and that everything will turn out as He has intended.

2. Seek Strength and Comfort in Prayer

An effective strategy for overcoming anxiety is prayer. Take a moment to pray and seek God's help when you are feeling overburdened. Pouring your heart out to God and telling him candidly about how you feel will ease your anxiety in a major way. Ask God for wisdom, peace, and the fortitude to overcome any obstacles that may arise. Also, it's crucial to pray for people who may be experiencing anxiety because doing so can give you a better perspective and remind you that you're not alone. Anxiety is pain. When you are going through it, it pains God too. When you pray, God will come through for you.

3. Turn to Scripture for Guidance

Once, when I opened up to a friend about what I was going through, he encouraged me to declare the verse 2 Corinthians 10:5 over myself. I decided to try it out. When I felt an overwhelming sense of anxiety looming, I sat down on my bed with tears in my eyes and spoke the words of the verse out loud: "I demolish every argument and pretension that is setting itself up against the knowledge of God and I take captive every thought and bring it to the obedience of Christ." It is hard to put into words what happened after that, but I literally felt something in me crumble to dust. The panic attack that I felt looming never arrived, thanks to the Word of God!

You can manage your anxiety thanks to the wisdom and direction found in the Bible. Choose verses that encourage and comfort you and that you can memorize.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7

4. Connect with a Christian Community

Connecting with a Christian community is another strategy for Christian teenagers to deal with anxiety. Being surrounded by other Christians, whether it be through your church, youth group, or Christian friends, can give you a sense of community and support.

5. Seek Professional Help

While prayer can offer solace and fortitude, it's crucial to get professional assistance and help if your anxiety is affecting everyday life. Reach out to a loved one you trust and let them know that you need resources to help you deal with anxiety. Counseling, therapy, or medication may be used as effective strategies for anxiety. Never hesitate availing professional and medical help when it is crucial and necessary.

Finally, keep in mind that anxiety does not define you. God loves you and has a purpose for your life since you are one of His treasured children. Rest in His love and grace, and have faith that He will help you overcome whatever obstacles that you face. You can overcome anxiety and lead a successful and pleasant life if you have faith, hope, and love.
