Dealing with Anxiety and Stress as a Christian Teen in School

Updated: May 22, 2023

Dealing with anxiety and stress as a Christian teen in school can be a daunting challenge. However, there is hope and comfort to be found in God's word. Here are some key points and biblical verses to help you cope with anxiety and stress as a Christian teen in school.

1. Seek God's peace

One of the most effective ways to deal with anxiety and stress is to seek God's peace. We all seek peace but the world is not capable of giving us the peace that we truly require. Peace that the world gives us is temporary and it does not last. Therefore, when you feel anxious or stressed, take a moment to pray and ask God for his peace to fill your heart and mind.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." - John 14:27.

2. Cast your worries on God

God cares about you and wants to carry your burdens. We need to remember that 'if God can care about the little birds that fly and provide for them then aren't we much more worth in God's eyes? Its easy to become anxious and be stressful when the situation seems tough. But, when you feel overwhelmed, take your worries to God in prayer and trust that he will take care of you.

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." - 1 Peter 5:7.

3. Practice self-care

Self-care is essential for managing anxiety and stress. Take care of your physical and emotional needs by getting enough sleep, eating well, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Often due to daily hassles, we forget to take care of ourselves. Taking care of your body is an act of worship to God.

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies." - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

4. Focus on the present moment

Anxiety often stems from worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. It is not easy to let go of certain things, but what good will it do by worrying? Will it resolve your issues? Instead of worrying about the future or past, focus on the present moment and trust that God is in control. It truly helps.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7.

5. Find support

Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or Christian mentor can be helpful in managing anxiety and stress. We all need people who support and care for us. Talking to a trusted person can lessen anxiety and stress, because your mind and heart finds an outlet to release what you have been holding inside. Not only that, but the person can share with you a new perspective that might help you perceive your situation in a different light and in turn help you improve your situation. So, reach out to those around you for support and encouragement.

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." - Proverbs 17:17.

6. Meditate on God's word

Meditating on God's word can provide comfort and strength in times of anxiety and stress. Take time to read and reflect on Scripture, and let it guide your thoughts and actions. As you meditate, you will realize the life of characters in the Bible weren't perfect at all. Even they had to go through hardships and yet, through it all God was with them. Similarly, when you meditate on God's word, you will find solace and peace. Also, you will find the encouragement you need to face anxious thoughts and overcome stress.

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." - Psalm 119:105.

7. Practice gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful antidote to anxiety and stress. Take time to reflect on the blessings in your life and express gratitude to God for them. We often forget to b grateful to God for all the mighty deeds that he has done in our lives. It not need be a near death situation but we can be thankful for things like being alive, for food, water, clothing and other needs that God has provided. There are thousands of people who dream of the life that you are living. So, practice gratitude.

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

8. Trust in God's plan

God has a plan for your life, and he is in control. When you feel anxious or stressed about the future, trust in God's plan and his timing. He knows what is best for you. He has not forgotten you but he knows when and how to provide for you. Trust in God as a child trusts his/her father.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11.

Dealing with anxiety and stress as a Christian teen in school requires intentional effort to seek God's peace, cast your worries on God, practice self-care, focus on the present moment, find support, meditate on God's word, practice gratitude, and trust in God's plan. It's also essential to remember that seeking help from mental health professionals is not a sign of weakness, but rather a brave and wise decision. God works through various means, including medical and therapeutic treatments, to bring healing and restoration to our lives.

In Psalm 147:3, it says, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

If you're struggling with anxiety and stress, reach out to a trusted mental health professional who can help you manage your symptoms and provide support and guidance.

Finally, it's essential to keep in mind that anxiety and stress are not something that you have to face alone. As a Christian, you are part of a community of believers who can provide love, support, and encouragement.

In Galatians 6:2, it says, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Reach out to your church or Christian friends for prayer and support, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
